L E T T E R M E N T

From the designer, Emily Chung

LETTERMENT is inspired by Notes To A Friend - a series of notes written by my sister, Yuri. A few months shy of her fourth year in remission from breast cancer, she discovered that it returned in the form of metastatic breast cancer. Her response was Notes To A Friend, a compilation of memories and thoughts throughout her experience.

LETTERMENT is my response - it is a translation of letter into garment and furthermore, an entirely new letter on its own.

The collection is heavily influenced, emotionally and visually, by the experience of handwritten letters - writing and receiving them. The harmony between ink and paper, the transparency and weight of a single sheet, and the motions of enclosing an envelope is the poignant theme throughout my collection. As a result of these thought processes, I relied on the visual elements of pleats, ties/closures, sheer fabrics and layering throughout LETTERMENT.
